Mind Your Mom!
Just about every May, I sit down to write Homeward Bound; I write about Mom’s Day. And why not… it is a very special day for very special people.
My Mom used to tell me, seemingly repeatedly, to do this and do that, not to do this and not to do that. ALL, I recall, very valuable advice. Looking back on it all these many years later, I can say she was a very wise woman.
Time reveals, in fact, just about every caring Mother is a wise woman. I can see why we carve out a special day each year to acknowledge Moms. So here is a shout-out to all Mom’s – Happy Mother’s Day!!
My Mother’s Birthday is May 23rd which falls very close to Mother’s Day each year.

Regardless, we can celebrate this Mother’s Day knowing Moms both here and no longer here are special in more ways than we can count. This leads me into our worthy cause and why we support the Alzheimer’s Organization because as many of you know my mom suffered from this hideous disease and My wife and I were her primary caregivers. So we saw the affects Alzheimer and other dementias have on our loved ones. And we are now committed to helping stamp this disease out for good.
Unfortunately, My Mom is no longer here. That makes me very sad this time of year. I am sure some reading this can relate and have similar stories. For ALL those whose mom is no longer with us, may you remember the best about them. In addition to that, there are also many who never knew their mom due to unfortunate circumstances. I bet someone played that role in their life and they too deserve a Happy Mother’s Day!

We decided to support this great nonprofit organization because of my personal experience in dealing with a loved one who suffered from this hideous disease. In 2014 my mom was diagnosed with dementia and subsequently had to move closer to me from her long-time home in Florida. Over the next several years being her primary caregiver, my wife and I had front row seats to the devastation this disease takes on our loved ones, their families and their caregivers. Mom passed away in June 2021 so I can no longer help her, but we can make a difference in others who are suffering. We are committed to The Alzheimer’s Association® because they are the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s care, support and research. Founded in 1980 by a group of family caregivers and individuals interested in research, the Association includes their home office in Chicago, a public policy office in Washington, D.C. and a presence in communities across the country. An estimated 55 million people worldwide are living with dementia. In the United States alone, more than 6 million have Alzheimer’s, and over 11 million are providing unpaid care. The Association addresses this crisis by providing education and support to the millions who face dementia every day, while advancing critical research toward methods of treatment, prevention and, ultimately, a cure.
